Preface
In order to meet the demand of the Olympic Game in 2008 and build Beijing
Capital Airport into an international hub and domestic gateway, after
being approved by CAAC, Beijing Capital Airport Authority has seriously
solicited the building schemes for the new passenger terminal area of
BCIA from the designers around the world.
As approved by the State Council, Beijing Capital Airport will be expanded
to handle 60 million passengers, 1.8 million tons of cargos and 500,000
aircraft movements annually. The new runway will be built on the east
side of the exiting east runway with an interval of 1525 meter. Except
the new runway, the expansion project includes the new taxiways and connecting
ways, the new passenger and cargo terminal areas between the new and the
east existing runway, the relevant subsidiary facilities such as traffic
network and municipal infrastructures. The new passenger terminal area
is the most important critical part of the expansion project. Its plan,
design and construction should realize the next 3 goals of building the
airport with hub function, meeting the demand of the Olympic Game and
demonstrating a new image of the airport. For this purpose, the building
schemes for the new passenger terminal area of BCIA have been solicited
from the designers around the world.
Invitations were given to the designers of the airport for the solicitation
of the building schemes. After intention inquiry and strict quality prequalification,
8 solicitors (airport design corporation or airport design joint venture)
were selected and 7 of them are the most famous airport design consortiums.
After meticulous preparation of 4 months, 7 solicitors (one withdrew)
submitted their building schemes before the deadline as specified. From
27 June to 2 July 2003, all of the schemes were carefully and seriously
appraised by a jury panel composed by 21 domestic and foreign experts
in the related fields.
Concerns and supports to the construction of Beijing Capital Airport have
been exerted by the people from all sectors of the society. In order to
hear opinions from the public more extensively and publicize the building
schemes for further improvement, in line with the approval of CAAC, we
are hereby organizing this public exhibition of the building schemes submitted
by the 7 solicitors on the internet and at the first floor of terminal
two of BCIA. The people from every sector of the society are most welcome
to the exhibition and your valuable comments will be appreciated. Meanwhile,
we are looking forward to your continuous care and support to the construction
of the expansion project of BCIA
